MYKOLA MASHCHENKO — THE UNKNOWN CLASSIC OF UKRAINIAN CINEMA

Mykola Mashchenko, one of the eminent Ukrainian directors, the former president of Dovzhenko Film Studios in Kyiv, is hardly known in Poland. The article reminds his role as a personage for years creating Ukrainian culture and supporting young filmmakers. The author focuses on Mashchenko’s leading role as a national artist of Ukraine with regard to his participation in different activities, aiming to constitute Ukrainian national culture, including Ukrainian national cinema. Therefore, especially important were Mashchenko’s links with the szetidiesiatniki movement and Ukrainian poetic cinema of the 60s., because in Soviet Ukraine it was one of the most efficient artistic manifestations of national identity. Describing the main screen works by Mykola Mashchenko, the author underlines the characteristics of his style, e.g. his attachment to ideas, expressive protagonists and unusual choices to challenge.
