A STORY OF OLD CINEMA. REVIEW OF STANISŁAW JANICKI'S BOOK ODEON. FELIETONY FILMOWE, OLSZANICA 2013

The review shortly presents Stanisław Janicki’s resume and discusses some of the issues raised in his new book, Odeon. The work is a record of the radio series during which Janicki a widely known fi lm critic outlines profi les of actors, tells stories of the pre-war cinema, and discusses its specifi cs. His attention is brought at the same time to both Hollywood stars, such as Charles Chaplin and Greta Garbo, and Polish celebrities, to name only Eugeniusz Bodo or Jadwiga Smosarska. The book is divided into four parts, and in the fi nal one the author introduces us to what he considers to be the most important works of the pre-war cinema. Even though some of the critics have published similar stories before, Odeon seems to be the author’s opus magnum. One may get an impression that as the years pass, Janicki’s knowledge grows larger, and his narration becomes just perfect. This is a necessary read not only for the connoisseurs but also for these who are about to start exploring the old cinema.

Translated by Agata Janus
