FILM NOIR UNDER THE BANNER OF GEORGES SIMENON, OR PAOLO SORRENTINO’S THE CONSEQUENCES OF LOVE

In her article Diana Dąbrowska analyzes Paolo Sorrentino’s The Consequences of Love from the perspective of Georges Simenon’s works. Using close reading method the author analyzes similarities between the film of the Italian director and the narrative structure and typology of the main characters of several works of the Belgian writer, such as The Man Who Watched the Trains Go By, The Widow Couderc, The Engagement. Titta di Girolamo, brilliantly played by Toni Servillo, seems an ungrateful heir of Kees Popinga or Jean Lavigne. One could even say that Sorrentino’s fascination with Simenon also involves the same creative method, a meticulous work on the screenplay material. The Consequences of Love remains to this day one of the most complex films of the Oscar-winning director.
