Abstract

Freak culture is an ambiguous concept that does not function as a concrete semantic category. It is a culture of fascination with otherness and, above all, its exposure. It has developed over the centuries, matching its categories to specific eras, constantly changing the catalog of its membership. Freak culture is governed by replicated mechanisms and patterns that form the basis of its existence, allowing it to be identified. Nowadays, freak culture is one of the irresistible elements of the media landscape, and unchecked and disregarded it can become a serious threat to the media of the future.
