The role and place of reflection on art in the formation of Jerzy Kmita’s socio-regulative concept of culture

Abstract

The theory of culture proposed by Jerzy Kmita is a project aiming at an adequate explanation of cultural phenomena and the participation of individuals — participants of culture — in them. The aim of the paper is to show the contemplation of art, present in the reflection of the Poznań researcher, as one from among important factors allowing the explication of detailed problems the researcher of culture faces, and showing the art itself in the social context: as a field of culture subject to social demands, with its social functions and without an autonomous character. Although Jerzy Kmita himself did not focus on the specific problems of art, it is an important point of reference for his reflection on culture.
