Abstract

To trust Bruno Latour anew. An Inquiry into Modes of Existence in the eyes of the French critics

This paper presents the French reception of Bruno Latour’s book An Inquiry into Modes of Existence and tries to show what divided the critics in their judgement of it. The author researched reviews from the prestigious sociological journals as well as from popular newspapers to work out how the critic’s response varied in different types of media. Although Latour is quite a well established author in his native country and An Inquiry... is often seen as his opus magnum, it was not universally acclaimed and received mixed reactions. Some critics formulated rather serious objections, but at the same time in France the book was neither able to provoke real enthusiasm nor strong disapproval.
