The issue is centred around the political dimension of the autonomy of art/literature, especially as it appears in the recent debates in the respective academic fields. The immediate basis for the issue is the “intentionalist” account of autonomy, developed in recent years by authors such as Walter Benn Michaels and Nicholas Brown, and the idea of the “social ontology” of art/literature. The articles in the issue offer both theoretical remarks on this general model, as well as specific in-depth interpretations that focus on autonomy of particular works, its political implications and social contexts. While the majority of the issue is published in English, included is also the Polish translation of the first chapter of Brown’s Autonomy: The Social Ontology of Art under Capitalism.
