Abstrakt

Description of lexicographical definitions of birds in Polish

The subject of this paper is an analysis of lexicographical defi nitions of birds names in general dictionaries of Polish. On the basis of analyzed data, the author claims that information in lexicographical descriptions of bird names do not have only an encyclopedic character. In Dunaj’s Dictionary of Contemporary Polish, there is a tendency to abandon a scientific description in favor of a linguistic description. All analyzed bird names are identifi ed as exapmles of the supercategory bird.
