The representation of the emotion of envy in the Ukrainian language picture of the world (axiological aspect)

Abstract

The article analyzes the axiological characteristics of the emotion of envy as verbalized in the Ukrainian language picture of the world. The axiological description of emotion reflects an extremely negative moral and hedonistic assessment. The author explicates the influence of hedonistic and moral assessment upon the conceptualization of envy in the linguistic consciousness of Ukrainians, presents a metaphorical conceptualization of envy in the images of pain, illness, aggressor, predator, poison, psychological oppression, fire, as well as through color designation and taste designation. The objects of the research are conceptual metaphors of “envy” in Ukrainian. The data for research were obtained from the Ukrainian National Linguistic Corpus (http://lcorp. ulif.org.ua/virt_unlc/).
