Abstract

In Dennis Sobolev’s novel, Jerusalem, which consists of seven stories, the memory of Russia is an important binder of the literary work and is present on two levels of its reception. The first level reveals itself by reflecting the realities of “Russian Israel” with its problems, mentality, searching for its own place in the world, etc. On the second level, the memory of Russia is hidden in the metaphorical and symbolic layer, and, above all, is connected with the image of St. Petersburg. The analysis of both levels proves that in the identity clash of memory of the past and the present of the characters of the novel, the present wins. It is a derivative of adapting in a specific environment, growing into culture and being.
