Abstract

Literary onomastics in the Danish, German and Russian translation of Władysław Stanisław Reymont's novel Chłopi

This paper looks briefly at the onomastic subcategories: anthroponymy, toponymy and zoonymy in the translation of Reymont's novel Chłopi into the Danish, German and Russian. It examines the various strategies of translating proper names and the mutual distance of the source and target cultures. Borrowing as the simplest type of translation was used by the Danish translator. Almost all the names were reproduced in the translated text exactly as they appear in the source text with suffering a sort of orthographic adjustment. A completely different strategy appears in the German text. The names were partly translated, partly replaced with the equivalent German form or a paraphrase. They were also modified to fit the phonological/graphological system of the target language. The Russian translation seems to be situated between the German and the Danish translation. The most serious problem of translation of Polish given names, which is present in the three translations, is their variety: contracted forms of a given name, diminutives and hypocoristics.
